19 ¼ x 22 inches. Fine original color; fine condition.
A striking city plan of Rome with vibrant original color. The plan is one of Seutter’s finest engravings, beautifully embellished with allegorical scenes and architectural views. In the lower right, beside a vignette portraying the tributaries of the Tiber, is an inset showing the original seven hill upon which Ancient Rome was built. The city’s most important churches and cathedrals are depicted in a set of views in the upper left; below these are the arms of each of the Rioni or administrative districts of Rome. The map’s dedicatory arms – those of Pope Benedict XIII – are surrounded with figures representing the Pope, the Church itself, and their divine mission (as evidenced by the angel flying overhead.)
