Item #9893 A Mapp of the Estates of the Great Duke of Russia Blanch or Moscovia Designed by Mouncr Sanson Geographer to the French King. R./ SANSON BLOME, M.
Scarce, Early English Map of Russia
Russia.
[London, 1682]

A Mapp of the Estates of the Great Duke of Russia Blanch or Moscovia Designed by Mouncr Sanson Geographer to the French King.

10 5/8 x 15 ¾ inches. Fine hand color; few filled wormholes in lower margin, else excellent condition.

An attractive example of one of the earliest maps of Russia to be both engraved and published in England. Its geography, like that of most of Blome’s maps, was based on the work of the French cartographer, Nicolas Sanson. The dedication to Thomas Crew, the Second Baron Crew of Northamptonshire (1624 –1697), helps pinpoint the date of this map to 1682. Blome sold his atlas by subscription and rewarded his subscribers with the inclusion of their arms in dedicatory cartouches on his maps. As subscribers changed, so changed the dedications.
