Item #9890 A Mapp of the Estates of the Turkish Empire in Asia and Europe…. R. BLOME.
Scarce, Early English Map of the Turkish Empire
Turkey/ Greece/ Armenia/ Caucasus/ Fertile Crescent..
[London, 1682]

A Mapp of the Estates of the Turkish Empire in Asia and Europe….

11 x 16 ¼ inches. Fine hand color; few filled wormholes in lower margin, else excellent condition.

One of the earliest maps of the Turkish Empire engraved and published in England.  Printed from two separate copperplates on one sheet, the map depicts the Ottoman Empire from Hungary to Persia and including the Empire’s frontier with Russia north of the Black Sea.

Blome sold his atlas by subscription and rewarded his subscribers with the inclusion of their arms on his maps. The dedicatee for this map is aptly chosen: Sir Heneage Finch (3rd Earl of Winchilsea from 1628 to 1689) was British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1668 to 1672. However he may have performed professionally, he was notorious in his personal life. He married four times and had no fewer than sixteen children. His practice of collecting and housing mistresses while abroad in Turkey brought comment from King Charles II himself: “My Lord, you have not only built a town, but peopled it too.
