From the first edition of the Braun & Hogenberg city atlas, a beautiful engraving comprised of city views of Trier, Koblenz and Rothenberg. Trier, Germany’s oldest city, appears at the top along the left bank of the Moselle. The 4th century Basilica of Constantine can be recognized, along with the other churches dominating the city’s center. The middle view of Koblenz shows the walled city at the confluence of the Moselle and the Rhine. The third view, of the medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber places the charming Franconian walled town atop a hill overlooking the Tauber river. (hence its name).

Featuried prominently in all three views are vineyards: both within and without the walls of Trier and Koblenz, and on the hillsides surrounding Rothenberg. Viticulture remains strong in all three regions.
