17 ¾ x 20 inches. Folding map; remargined at insertion point with a good strike, excellent condition. (with) Letter from The Secretary of War transmitting A report and survey of the harbor of Portland, in the state of Maine. 5pp, plus sheet of diagrams of breakwater.

Early, detailed plan of Portland Harbor, produced to accompany a report to the 23rd Congress with regard to a proposed breakwater for the harbor.  The survey was executed by Lt. Col. John Anderson at the instruction of the Secretary of War Lewis Cass; the chart itself was drawn by Lt. B. Poole and engraved by J. V. N. Throop. The city’s early street grid is shown, and such landmarks as Mount Joy, Cumberland, Oxford Canal and Cape Elizabeth are marked.
