68-piece puzzle of the world, paper on balsa wood; in original cherry box (7 1/4 x 9 1/4 x 2 1/4 inches) with sliding top cover, on which is colorful lithographed title; with puzzle map also printed separately in heavy paper. Light foxing & wear to puzzle pieces; box very good, slight wear & scuffing to top with early owner's signature; map on paper very good; near excellent overall.
Sturdy, attractively packaged, jigsaw puzzle of the world of 68 wooden pieces. The puzzle is accompanied by the same map printed on heavy paper to ease the way for the presumably young puzzle maker. Gall and Inglis, publishers of both Edinburgh and London, produced the map. They were prolific publishers of maps of many kinds but particularly for recreation and education from the mid 18th century to the early 20th century. On the map, Gall lays claim to the projection used for it. "In the last quarter of the nineteenth century the trade [in geographic puzzles] was dominated by William Peacock..." (Norcia).
