Geographical, Statistical, And Historical Map Of Jamaica.
16 ½ x 20 ¾ inches. Full, original wash color; excellent condition. A very well-executed map of the island that appeared at a relatively early point in American map printing. Text surrounding the map provides a wealth of commercial, topographic, statistical, and cultural information about Jamaica, including the population breakdown between free and slave, its government, economy, and climate. There is also a historical account, remarkable in the vehemence of its portrayal of The English as conquerors and pillagers of singular cruelty, especially in their treatment of the Maroons, the population of freedmen and escaped slaves who fought a long guerilla war against the British in Jamaica. It seems likely that this is an expression both of the Irish Carey’s long standing pro-American and anti-British politics, and Lea’s Quaker sensibilities.
