Item #7647 The States of Ohio Indiana & Illinois and Michigan Territory. E. STRONG.
A Midwest Rarity
Ohio/ Michigan/ Indiana/ Illinois.
[New York, 1835]

The States of Ohio Indiana & Illinois and Michigan Territory.

15 ¾ x 20 ¾ inches. Lithograph with original hand color, refreshed; mounted on new linen; moderately toned, still excellent of its kind.

A very rare, well-executed, separately published work originally issued as a small wall map. Michigan, which was not admitted as a state until 1837, is shown as a territory here. At the time, the border between Michigan Territory and Ohio was very much at issue, leading to a brief war between the two entities just after this map was published. Tables supply the populations of the counties of the states shown here and of the Michigan Territory as of 1830.
The general layout and outlines of the map appear to have been based on Finley’s 1826 Map of the States of Ohio Indiana & Illinois in his New American Atlas. However, Strong’s map virtually doubles the surveyed lands in the Michigan Territory and added much new information in the former Northwest Territory and in most other areas as well.
Karpinski cites a copy of the map with a date of 1833, suggesting that there was at least one other edition. Our example has the 1835 date stamped over what was likely the erased 1833 date. Also, this is the only map listed under Strong in Tooley’s Dictionary of Mapmakers, Vol. Q-Z, p. 227.
There is no record of the map in map catalogues in the last 20 years.
