Item #7441 The First Hotel Erected by the Oak Bluffs Land & Wharf Co. 1867. Charles Wesley / FORBES CO FIELD.
Martha’s Vineyard First Hotel
Martha’s Vineyard.
[1878]

The First Hotel Erected by the Oak Bluffs Land & Wharf Co. 1867.

11 ½ x 6 3/8 inches, Chromolithograph. Lightly toned, else excellent on heavy paper.

A superb chromolithograph, capturing the burnishing effects of rosy dawn lighting, of Martha’s Vineyard first resort hotel.  The plain, somewhat barn-like structure depicted here is in keeping with the middle-class nature of the Wesleyans who created the island’s first resort community.  Other and grander hotels soon followed, resulting in Oak Bluffs becoming the island’s first resort center.  The artist’s name and the date both appear within the engraving.  An exceptional example on heavy paper.
