This striking chromolithograph of a Right Whale (Greenland Whale) is based on an original painting by Austrian artist Josef Fleischmann. Published in Vienna by Carl Gerolds Sohn, it was originally featured in Hartinger’s Wall Plates for Instruction in Natural History, a celebrated series of large-scale zoological and botanical prints designed for classroom education.

The dramatic composition depicts an Arctic whaling scene: a massive whale dominates the foreground, while a small boat with a poised harpooner steadily approaches. In the background, a large whaling ship navigates through towering icebergs and frozen ice floes.

The artist, Josef Fleischmann (1867–1925), was an Austrian illustrator and lithographer based in Vienna. He is highly regarded for his meticulous natural history illustrations. Albert Berger (active 1894–1937), the master lithographer behind this chromolithograph, was renowned for printing works by major Vienna Secession artists.
