Mort Tragique du Capitaine Cook. Le 15. Fevrier, 1779.
10 ½ x 11 ¾ inches. Excellent condition. A fine, separately published, French engraving of Webber's iconic scene of the tragic death of Captain James Cook in Hawaii. The edition was dedicated to Louis-Antoine Bougainville, the French explorer and circumnavigator, who is herein identified as a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. The official account of Cook's third and final voyage, both English and French editions, did not include this engraving of his death. Many, however, were subsequently published due to the tragic nature of Cook's demise. This French edition, however, is scarce. The text below the image provides a brief biography of Cook.
