Item #5802 Birds Eye View Of Hoboken. J./ SCHMIDT BACHMANN, C.
Superb, Rare View of Hoboken
Hoboken.
[New York, 1865]

Birds Eye View Of Hoboken.

13 ¾ x 19 inches. Two-stone lithograph with vibrant original hand color; fine condition.

A very finely executed view of the prospering city of Hoboken in New Jersey in a very fine example.  The image presented is of an orderly, even genteel city, with the bucolic New Jersey countryside in the background.  Several ships, both sail and steam-powered, can be seen at or near the terminals; three of paddle-wheel steamers were the “Elise,” the “Hoboken,” and the “Morristown.”

The view was executed with an artistry beyond what is usually found on such works.  This is evident in its delicate treatment of clouds and water and in the subtle rendering of shadow.

This work is not be confused with another view of Hoboken published by Bachmann just five years earlier (Reps 2343 and Deak 753).
