Item #484 The Russian Dominions in Europe. R. HOLMES LAURIE.
A Rare, Handsome Map of Russia
Russia/ Ukraine/ Belarus/ Scandinavia.
[London, 1823]

The Russian Dominions in Europe.

24 x 31 inches. Fine original wash & outline color; some edge chipping, else excellent.

An apparently very rare map that hasn’t been seen in catalogues in at least 20 years.  As indicated in a notation following the title, it was based on Russian sources: “Reduced chiefly, from the great Map of Russia, in 107 Sheets.”  It is thus a very accomplished, precisely detailed work that covers eastern Russia and territories to the Polish border.  Much of Scandinavia is also included.

Thus far, this map is something of a mystery to us.  While it has the appearance of an atlas map, we have not found it listed in the contents of the atlases published by the Laurie & Whittle firm or by Robert Holmes Laurie, as listed in Phillips, Shirley and NMM Catalogue.  R. H. Laurie was the son of the firm’s founder and took over the business upon the death of the James Whittle in 1818.  It is possible that Laurie fils published a now very rare, late edition of the firm’s New and Elegant Imperial Atlas, and this map was included in it.  The size of this map conforms to those in this atlas.
