Item #4604 Untitled globe gore. V. CORONELLI.
By One of the Greatest Globe Makers
Peru/ Chile/ Pacific Ocean.
[Venice, 1697]

Untitled globe gore.

18 x 11 ½ inches, Very slightly trimmed at bottom, else very good condition.

A beautifully executed globe gore showing two stretches of the coast of South America. The more northerly is that of Peru, from Quito to the Camaná province. To the south, the Chilean coast is shown from Huasco to the vicinity of the Parque Nacional Laguna San Rafael, south of the Isla Grande de Chiloe.

The larger portion of the gore is comprised of the Pacific Ocean and  includes a portion of the track of Le Maire’s circumnavigation.  Some of the water space is utilized for descriptions of the cities of Lima and of Chiloe as well as notations on other important ports.  The gore is decorated with an engraving of natives paddling canoes – a good deal farther from land than one might recommend.

Coronelli did not publish this gore to be assembled into a globe by the buyer. The purpose was to make available at a more affordable price what he evidently regarded as his best work.  Globes were not only extremely expensive but also very difficult to make, thus making it impossible for Coronelli to meet the demand for them.  The set of gores to which this one belonged were published in two printed works.  One is Coronelli’s grand compilation of the gores of all of his globes called the Libro dei Globi, published in 1697.  Complete copies of this work are of the greatest rarity.  These gores also appeared in the second volume of one of Coronelli’s general atlases, the Isolario, also published in 1697.
