Item #450011 Geographie. C. de SAVIGNY.
What Is a Map, Logically Speaking?
World.
[Paris, 1587]

Geographie.

16 x 12 ¼ inches, Fine condition.

A visually intriguing work, somewhat whimsical as well as seriously academic as a pedagogical device, that attempts to define a map by various means. An elegant reduction Ortelius’ 1570 world map, Typus Orbis Terrarum, is here surrounded by a logic diagram describing the discipline of geography, i.e. it diagrams the logical links among various concepts within the discipline. There are many types of logic diagrams, and the one presented here, quite fittingly, most closely the one called a Concept Map. In the oval framework surrounding the above are map-related terms and concepts that are illustrated by often amusing vignettes. This work appeared in Savigny’s Tableaux Accomplis De Tous Les Arts, in which the disciplines of grammar, rhetoric, dialectics, geometry and others are represented with similar “logic trees.”
