L’età della Chiesa compendiosamente mostrata ai fedeli di Gesu Cristo nei dieciotto secoli, che la compongono affine d'istruirli di quanto e in lei avvenuto dall'anno del Signore 45. fino all'anno 1778.
4to (24 x 16.5 cm). xii, 404 pp. Woodcut of woman with a papal crown on title page. Old quarter vellum over boards, red morocco titling piece on spine. Corners and extremities a bit rubbed, otherwise excellent. Extremely rare first and only edition of this abbreviated encyclopedia of Church history from the first century to the end of the eighteenth, with special focus on saints and heretics. Each chapter begins with a five-part list of major figures and events within that century—popes, heretics, councils, ecclesiastical writers and saints—followed by a precís of the life and works of each. Significant events of Catholic history are here (e.g. the Jerusalem, Nicene and Tridentine Councils), as are dozens of Church fathers, medieval theologians and Counter-Reformation figures such as Borromeo and Bellarmine. Of greater interest is Locatelli’s roundup of Reformation “heretics”: Luther, Calvin, Melanchthon, Martin Bucer and Jan Hus, among others, and—from the 18th C—Loch Locke and Pierre Bayle! Not in OCLC.
