Item #2770 Untitled Globe Gore. V. CORONELLI.
Fascinating Globe Gore of Russia and the Middle East
Russia/ Middle East.
[Venice, 1692]

Untitled Globe Gore.

17 x 10 ½ inches. Fine hand color, some spotting in margins, else excellent.

A beautifully engraved, fascinating and scarce globe gore by Coronelli, generally recognized as the greatest early globemaker. The gore displays Russia, the Caucasus, and the Fertile Crescent, including modern day Iraq and part of Iran.
Coronelli did not publish this gore to be assembled into a globe by the buyer. The purpose was to make available at a more affordable price what he evidently regarded as his best work. Globes were not only extremely expensive but also very difficult to make, thus making it impossible for Coronelli to meet the demand for them. The set of gores to which this one belonged were published in two printed works. One is Coronelli’s grand compilation of the gores of all of his globes called the Libro dei Globi, published in 1697. Complete copies of this work are of the greatest rarity. These gores also appeared in the second volume of one of Coronelli’s general atlases, the Isolario, also published in 1697.
