Occasional light spotting in outer margins, but overall excellent. Second edition and fresh copy of this popular Italian illustrated obstetrics guide, containing plates of anatomical diagrams of the pelvis and uterus, illustrations of forceps and other obstetrical instruments, and a bed specially designed for giving birth. Tanaron’s handbook is concise and authoritative: in addition to chapters on anatomy and a brief description of conception, Tanaron discusses illnesses that might befall mother and infant, methods of handling difficult births, and emergency surgical procedures. The last chapter, p.199- 245 deals with neonatology and pediatrics. He draws upon more than 100 medical authorities, both ancient and modern, including the father of scientific obstetrics, Mauriceau. L’ostetrica was first published in Florence by Giuseppe Allegrini in 1768. This 1769 edition was followed by a second Venice edition in 1775. Tanaron, active from 1754-1774, also authored a popular work on surgery.
