Rare, second edition and a mint copy of this popular Italian illustrated obstetrics guide. Containing plates of anatomical diagrams, illustrations of tools including several types of forceps, and somewhat atypically in our experience, a depiction of a lying-in bed without the mother to make viewing of a 'system' of blankets clearer. Tanaron's handbook is concise and authoritative: in addition to chapters on anatomy and a brief description of conception, Tanaron discusses illnesses that might befall mother and infant, methods of handling difficult births, and emergency surgical procedures. He draws upon more than 100 medical authorities, both ancient and modern, including the father of scientific obstetrics, Mauriceau.
L'ostetrica was first published in Florence by Giuseppe Allegrini in 1768. This 1769 edition was followed by a second Venice edition in 1775. Tanaron also authored a popular work on surgery.
