Item #266 Aeth a Strong Frontier Town in Brabant, taken by the Duke of Marlborough in 1706. P. RAPIN de THOYRAS.
A Detailed Plan of a 17th Century Walled City
Ath/ Belgium..
[London, c. 1740]

Aeth a Strong Frontier Town in Brabant, taken by the Duke of Marlborough in 1706.

14 ¾ x 18 ½ inches. Excellent.

An elegantly engraved plan of the fortifications of the Belgian city of Ath, shown at the time of the Spanish War of Succession. An attractively engraved cartouche encloses the names of various numbered bastions, castles and other earthwork, and the plan shows the courses of the Eastern and Western Dender Rivers as they meet in the city, and are guided into its network of moats. The system of ravelins, moats and half-moons used in the defenses of Ath was state of the art in the 17th century, and it was the last of the Belgian cities to capitulate to the Duke of Marlborough at the close of the Ramillies campaign of 1706.
