Nouveau Systeme De Chimie Organique, Fondur Des Methodes Nouvelles D'Observation.

8vo. 96, 576 pp., 12 folding plates, 6 colored. Half morocco with marbled paper over boards. Deckle edges. Bookplate on front flyleaf. Some scattered foxing; plates generally clean; overall good.

First edition of a pivotal book in organic chemistry and the most important and original scientific work of a self-taught, somewhat belligerent scientist-politician (1794-1878). "Raspail held a prominent place in the development of science in the 19th century. In organic chemistry he specified the properties of numerous substances... Raspail belonged to a group of biologists who prepared the way for the rise of the cell theory. Although it would be too strong to call him the creator of the modern concept of the cell, the definitions and descriptions he gave of the cell are truly remarkable." (DSB XI.300-302)

The Nouveau Systeme de Chimie Organique was put on the Index in 1834, but was nevertheless translated into German, English and Italian as well as republished within five years of its first publication.

Remarkable are the 12 plates which are the results of Raspail's highly regarded studies with a microscope of his own design and construction.
