Item #218 Souvenir Model Of The Panama Canal. L. L. MADURO Jr.
Souvenir Model Of The Panama Canal.
Early Relief Map of the Panama Canal
Panama Canal.
[Panama & New York, 1910 & 1911]

Souvenir Model Of The Panama Canal.

Lithographed, raised relief map (4 ¼ x 13 inches) on heavy boards with single fold (total opened size, 9 1/8 x 13 ¾ inches). Minor wear, a few stains but excellent of this type.

Although this is labelled a "souvenir model," this scarce work in fact provides an excellent depiction of the entire length of the 51-mile canal, and the raised surface of the map suggests the torturous terrain through which the canal was dug.  Maduro published several works relating to the canal, but this one is much scarcer than the others.  Facing the relief map is a profile of the canal illustrating the altitudes along which it travels and various statistics.

Began by the French in 1881, the canal was completed by the United States in 1914.  It was arguably the most challenging engineering project undertaken, one that involved massive loss of life in the course of its completion and required engineering feats never before attempted.
