Cropped ink ownership inscription of an unidentified monastery of Discalced Carmelites in lower margin of title; faint water stain in gutter and a handful of leaves toned; otherwise good.

First edition of this potted version of Venetian history as seen through the portraits and other paintings hanging in or decorating some of the public rooms of the Palazzo Ducale after the fire of 1577, of art historical interest for the disposition of numerous famous Venetian paintings during the 16th century. The Florentine Bardi describes the ciruumstances of the fire and the reorganization of the Sala dello Scrutinio and the Grand Council, and describes the physical disposition of both the historical paintings (the great wars and conquests of Venice) as well as portraits of Doges, a permanent record of whose likeness was a de facto duty of office. The best known artists include Domenico and Jacopo Tintoretto, and Paolo Veronese.
