Rare, first and sole American edition of this comprehensive guide by a Liverpool wine and spirit merchant to making and maintaining liquors, wines, beers and a wide assortment of alcoholic beverages (first edition 1805). In addition to the grape based wines, the work treats more than three dozen wines produced from fruits (oranges!) and herbs. Attention is given to recipes for making beer, cider, jenever, claret, brandy, rum, bitters, sherry, cordials, malt liquor, etc. Also of interest are chapters on how to build a wine cellar and how to bottle beer. Prior to modern methods of fermentation, spoilage of alcoholic beverages was a relatively common occurrence, and here we are given numerous remedies both for reversing the process of spoilage and more generally ameliorating the quality of mediocre products (some of the latter addressed to merchants).

OCLC lists copies of this, the only American edition, at Yale, LC, Iowa, Illinois, and the American Antiquarian Society. A version of Davies’ guide first appeared in 1805 in Liverpool and over the next two decades in editions from Leeds, Newcastle, and London.
