Spain and Portugal..
[Amsterdam, c. 1680]
Hispaniae Et Portugaliae Regna.
18 x 22 inches, Fine original color, refreshed; some staining to upper centerfold, very good. An attractive example of this classic, Dutch map of Spain and Portugal. The allegorical cartouche depicts Europa and a trio of putti upon a plinth supporting the arms of the Spanish Habsburgs. A banner proclaims the Spanish motto “plus ultra.” In the lower left corner of the map upon the scale of miles, two putti play with a cross staff and a mariner’s astrolabe, evoking Portugal and Spain’s historical navigational prowess.
