One of the Most Striking Early Maps of Africa
Africa..
[Amsterdam, 1595/1628]

Africa Ex magnus orbis terre descriptione Gerardi Mercatories desumpta. Studio & industria G.M. Iunioris.

14 3/4 x 18 1/4 inches. Fine original color; unobtrusive scuff at upper centerfold, else excellent condition with a superb strike.

A stunning, original-colored example of this landmark map of Africa, directly based on Mercator’s 1569 wall map of the world. It is a prime example of Mercator’s craft, engraved with fine calligraphy and a particularly beautiful cartouche surmounted with fauns. While superficially resembling the Ortelius map of Africa, the Mercator is more detailed, including more cities and rivers, particularly in South Africa. Abyssinia is marked with a crowned, enthroned, cross-bearing Prester John.
