Item #10970 Constantinople. ARTARIA, F. CO./ RUNK.
An Exquisite, Rare Panorama of Constantinople
Constantinople/ Istanbul.
[Vienna, c. 1820]

Constantinople.

17 ¼ x 28 inches. (44cm x 72cm), Etching finished with original hand color; mint condition.

Very rare.  A superb example one of the finest views of Constantinople we have handled. The great city, seen here from the east, overlooking Üsküdar and the Bosphorus, appears as it was during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II. The Topkapi Palace, the Hagia Sophia, and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque are accurately portrayed, as are the city’s many other mosques. The Bosphorus and the Golden Horn are teeming with ships and smaller sailboats. In the foreground, a group of men in Turkish garb – possibly representing the Sultan and his courtiers – relax on a pleasant hillside overlooking the city.

We have found only one other example of this print, in an uncolored proof state, in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek.

Price: $9,500.00
