Item #10870 Historical Map of Charleston 1670-1883. Louis J. BARBOT.
A Fascinating Plan of Charleston
Charleston/ Albemarle Point/ South Carolina..
[New York, 1884]

Historical Map of Charleston 1670-1883.

27 ¼ x 26 inches. Toned, mends and reinforcements at some junctures of folds, overall very good.

A scarce, richly detailed, historical plan of Charleston and the surrounding area, printed to accompany an address by Charleston Mayor William Courtenay on the occasion of that city’s centennial. As is appropriate to that subject, the plan highlights the earliest European settlements in the vicinity, with a key naming the original land holders and the acreage of their plots. Other historical notes on the plan include the first successfully cultivated indigo in the colony, and the location of the 1670 headquarters of Governor William Sayle. An unusually well produced and informative work given its commemorative nature.
