16 x 20 ½ inches. Superb original color; fine condition.
A pristine example, in glorious original color of this map of l’Isle de France, produced by the leading map firm of Amsterdam at the height of the Dutch Golden Age. Paris is represented by a miniature plan of the city, making it distinct from the other towns of the region which are represented in a more stylized fashion.
The lavish cartouche is surmounted with the French arms, crowned and attended by two angels. The base of the cartouche is surrounded with garlands of fruit and grapes, and flanked by a French nobleman and noblewoman. Balancing this scene in the opposite corner, another noble instructs two putti in the use of cartographic tools.
