A beautifully engraved map of the Dalmatian Coast, which appeared in Mercator’s edition of Ptolemy, the second-century Alexandrian geographer; it was the recovery Ptolemy’s data that ushered in Renaissance in cartography. In his edition of the work, Mercator developed a baroque style of map ornamentation featuring strapwork designs, flowers and grotesques, all ingeniously interwound one with the other. This style was adopted and extended by Hondius and others in maps that would become synonymous with cartography of the Dutch Golden Age.
