Rare, Fine Wall Map of Connecticut Towns
Old Saybrook/ Essex/ Connecticut.
[Philadelphia, 1853]

Map of the Towns of Saybrook and Old Saybrook Middlesex County Connecticut.

46 ½ x 42 ½ inches, Lithograph with full original color. Expertly conserved & re-mounted on new linen; some darkening & splitting in top portion, else an unusually bright example; overall excellent condition.

A beautifully preserved wall map, in very attractive, period wash coloring, of the lower Connecticut towns of Old Saybrook, Essex, Deep River, Centerbrook and Ivoryton, located at or near the mouth of the Connecticut River on the eastern side. The overall map is complemented with detail plans of the central areas of the towns of Essex, Deep River and Old Saybrook. The work also includes numerous illustrations of prominent businesses and of the homes of leading families in the area. The map appeared a year after Essex was incorporated in 1852.
It would seem that the only way the publication of such an elaborate and expensive map as this of an area with a relatively small population was commercially feasible was if it was produced on a subscription basis. That this was the case is certainly suggested by the several illustrations of private homes on the work and the large number of private residences and their owners’ names indicated on the map itself.
Please note that the darkened areas of the map as shown in the image are not as pronounced on the actual map.
