Magdeburg.
[Cologne, 1572]
Magdeburgum.
12 ½ x 17 inches. Excellent condition. A beautiful, detailed bird’s eye view of the Saxon city of Magdeburg, printed in the 1572 first issue of Braun & Hogenberg’s Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the first city atlas. The city’s churches are accurately depicted and named, and its medieval defenses – the walls, the moat– are shown as well. As is typical of Braun & Hogenberg’s views, in the foreground we see two men and two women wearing the fashions of the city. A medallion at the top of the engraving displays the city’s coat of arms.
