23 ½ x 18 inches. Fine hand wash color, some light damp staining to margins, else excellent with wide margins on heavy paper.

A beautiful examples of one of the finest nautical charts of the Indian Coast in the region including the ports of Surat, Mumbai and Goa. It was produced at the beginning of the long conflict between the British and the Maratha Confederacy over control of western India.  The chart includes detailed soundings along the coast, marks the location of dangerous shoals, and in some cases details the consistency of the ocean floors, an additional source of important navigational information at the time.

The artfully presented coastal views were not decorative features but rather important cues to the navigator in confirming a ship’s supposed location.
