Navigational Chart Including a Key Area of the Slave Trade
Slave Trade/ Senegal/ Barbary Coast/ Gibraltar/ Spain.
GOOS, P. [Amsterdam, 1666] De Cust van Barbaria, Gualata.
17 x 20 ¾ inches. Fine original color, refreshed; mended marginal splits, else excellent.
A very attractive nautical chart of primarily the northwest coast of Africa, extending as far south as the mouth of Gambia River, a key location in the slave trade. The river’s central role was guaranteed by its status as the only river along Africa’s west coast that allows inland navigation. The chart also includes all of the Barbary Coast, the Strait of Gibraltar, some of the coast of Spain, the Cape Verde, Canary, and Madeira islands, and some of the Azores.
