The Classic Dutch Map of Russia
Russia.
HONDIUS, H. / JANSSON, J [Amsterdam, 1653] Novissima Russiae Tabula Authore Isaaco Massa.
18 ½ x 21 ¾ inches Superb hand color; excellent condition.
One of the most attractive, general, early maps of Russia in a beautiful example. It is remarkably well detailed, particularly along the Dvina River, which was the primary trade route used by the Dutch to reach Moscow. The map is based on the work of the Dutch cartographer Isaac Massa, who traveled to Moscow in the first part of the 17th century. In the cartouche, Russian noblemen are seen surrounding the royal crest.
