Bird’s-eye view of Solothurn, Switzerland, showing the “old town” with its fortifications, churches, and fountains. The surrounding hilly countryside is divided and fenced into orderly lots; another sort of order is alluded to by the presence of a gallows and a torture wheel to the right. Mountains command the background of the woodcut.
