A Separately Published, La Freri Map of Italy
Of Great Importance and Rarity
BERTELLI, F. [Venice, 1565]
Italia Nouamete posta in Luce et da molti errori emendata….
15 3/8 x 22 ¼ inches
Two joined sheets. Fine condition with wide margins.
The first state of one of the rarest and most attractive Lafreri-type maps of all of Italy, in a superb, full-margined example. Borri reports that only a few examples of this finely engraved map have surfaced. “Di questa magnifica carta, quasi sconosciuta sino a pochi anni orsono, sono noti pochissimi esemplari …” He further observes that while based primarily on an anonymous map of 1544 (Borri 33) and the Gastaldi map of 1548 (Borri 32), Bertelli’s work is far more refined and detailed. Its title states that the map corrects numerous errors of previous works. We are aware of later states of the map published in 1575 and 1585, though these are recorded neither by Borri nor by Bifolco & Ronca.
