Beautiful 16th Century Woodcut View of an Alsatian City
Selestat, Alsace, Wine Regions.
MUNSTER, S. [Basle, c. 1550] Selestadium vulgo Schletstatt, civitas imperialis, in medio Alsatiae optimo loco sita.
8 ¾ x 13 inches Printer’s crease, else excellent.
Lovely woodcut of Sélestat, showing the walled city along the left bank of the Ill River near the Alsace wine route. Many of the city’s landmark buildings, including the church of Sainte-Foy appear in the view. Castles can be seen on mountaintops in the background, and are named. In the foreground is a view of the hilly countryside with plentiful cattle and waterfowl along the river.
