A Superb Work by a Master Mapmaker
BLAEU, W. [Amsterdam, 1640/ 1663]
Virginiae partis australis, et Floridae . . .
15 x 19 ¾ inches.
Fine hand color; excellent condition.
A map that combines great beauty with historical importance: “the most correct map of this area yet to appear.” (Cumming) “The Chesapeake Bay is changed from a small bay to its proper shape.” (Cumming) The South Carolina coast and the Outer Banks have been updated, and the map shows the early Irish settlement at Newport News. It is also a particularly attractive example Blaeu’s open and clean engraving style.
Burden 253; Cumming 41; Goss 31.
