Beautifully Colored Chart of the Classical Constellations
Classical Constellations/ Southern Hemisphere..
CELLARIUS, A. [Amsterdam, 1660]
Haemisphaerium Stellatum Australe Antiquum.
17 ¼ x 20 inches.
Fine hand color heightened with gold; reinforced at bottom centerfold, else excellent condition.
Richly-colored example of the first edition of the classical constellations of the southern skies, one of the best known and most often reproduced of the works of Cellarius. His star charts and astronomical engravings, which were gathered in the Harmonium Macrocosmica, are considered the finest of their kind ever to appear in print. This chart shows only the constellations first observed by the ancient Greeks and preserves the original names and symbols applied to them by the Greeks. All the constellations shown, therefore, are those that are visible with the naked eye.
