An Excellent Map of Australia & the South Pacific
Australia/ New Zealand/ Hawaii/ South Pacific..
REINECKE, Johann Matthias [Weimar, 1804]
General Charte von Australien...
17 ¾ x 24 inches.
Original wash color on light-green toned paper; skinned area in center but no loss of engraved surface, else excellent.
An uncommon map described by Tooley as “the first German map to separate the Island of Tasmania from the continent of Australia.” Tooley further notes updatings found on this 1804 state of the map that was originally published 1801: “Additional names in N. S. W. Shanks and Portland Bays to the North of Bass’s Strait, and Mount Warning north of Sydney. Entrecasteauxs Is. and Legrands Bay added on South Coast.”
On the map Australia is named New Holland, formerly Ulimaroa, and New South Wales is called both South Wales and Sydney Cove.
Reinecke was the cartographer of the Geographical Institute in Weimar, which published the map.
