The Holy Land of the Biblical Era
With Splendid Original Color
ORTELIUS, A. [Antwerp, 1592]
Typvs Chorographicvs, Celebrivm Locorvm In Regno Ivdae Et Israhel... .
13 7/8 x 18 inches
Fine original color; excellent condition.
Lavishly engraved and richly colored map of the Holy Land, shown divided into the kingdoms of Judea and Israel and the regions of the 12 tribes, with political divisions and place names as they were in the world of the Old Testament. Biblical and ancient geography was of particular interest to Ortelius, and this and other similarly historic maps were designed and drawn by Ortelius himself, unlike the "modern" maps in his atlas. The coast on the map extends from Beirut to Gaza. The map bears a date of 1586 but was not published until 1590, suggesting that a great deal of time must have been devoted to its engraving.
