With a New Definition of 'Flower'
& Over 1300 Woodcuts
DODOENS, Rembert. Stirpium Historiae Pemptades Sex Sive Libri XXX. Antwerp, Plantin, 1583.
Folio [35.5 x 21.5 cm], (10) ff., 860 pp., (14) ff., including over 1300 woodcuts in text. Bound in contemporary vellum over boards, raised bands on spine, with title stenciled in a neat hand. Light waterstain in lower right margin of title. Some foxing and spotting on scattered leaves, with light browning to a small handful. Generally very good; a tall attractive copy.
$7,500 First edition of Dodoens' summation of his botany, the "most comprehensive botanical work, incorporating material from a number of his earlier books, including the Cruyderboeck. The work divides plants into 26 families, introduces many new species, and also marks a stage in the development of plant anatomy. "It is of interest, too, in that Dodoens here made an attempt at an explanation of the parts of plants. It consists of only a page and a third 'but the selection of the words explained and the substance of the explanations hit the essential points better than Fuchs.' (Sachs)" (Hunt 143).
