The Florentine Bardi describes the cirumstances of the fire and the reorganization of the Sala dello Scutinio and the Grand Council, and describes the physical disposition of both the historical paintings (the great wars and conquests of Venice) as well as portraits of Doges, a permanent record of whose likeness was a de facto duty of office. The best known artists include Domenico and Jacopo Tintoretto, and Paolo Veronese.
